Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Plaque

Accession Number:
2023.4.54On April 7, 1968, Congress approved the creation of the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs or BNDD.
John Ingersoll, a former police chief of Charlotte, North Carolina, was appointed Director of the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs on August 1, 1968. This plaque hung in John Ingersoll’s office during his time as director of BNDD.
Although BNDD operated for only 5 years, they oversaw many important moments in drug law enforcement. For example, Mr. Ingersoll helped President Nixon pass the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act in 1970. This act included the Controlled Substances Act which remains a critical part of drug law enforcement today.
In July 1973, BNDD along with other federal agencies were again reorganized to create DEA.
